Donald B. McConnell age 77, of Hiawassee, Georgia went home to be with his Lord on November 29, 2011, following a hard fought battle with lung cancer. He was born on April 8, 1934 in Akron, Ohio, son of the late George and Hazel (Williams) McConnell. He is survived by his loving wife, Joanna, who was a wonderful caregiver throughout his journey, his daughters Teresa (Sam) Purses, Susan (Bob) Shroyer and one son, Reed (Sue) McConnell as well as many very special grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don grew up in Hiawassee, Georgia and graduated from Towns County High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War, then moved to Ohio to take advantage of job opportunities. He worked in a wide variety of occupations including: precision machinist, Chief of Police in East Canton, owned an Oil and Gas Company, served as an Administrator for both Indian River School and for the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services for the State of Ohio. He was committed to community service volunteering as a coach, on boards such as the Stark County Mental Health and Retardation Board and the underwater rescue team for the Stark County Sheriff’s Dept. Don retired and returned to Georgia to care for his parents. His passions were gardening, finished carpentry and wood-working. He loved spending time in the mountains with his wife, whom he adored, and his family. He was a kind and supportive father. He is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville. Don is preceded in death by his first wife, Yvonne (Yanders) McConnell and an infant son. Special thanks to Father Liam, Father Wise, Father Gadziala, Deacon John Paul McGuire and the St. Francis family for their faithful support. The family also deeply appreciates the compassionate care of the Regency Hospice nurses! A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, Georgia at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3rd with Celebrants Fr. Tim Gadziala and Fr. Rev. Alan Steven Becker age 64 of Lake
Nottley Drive Blairsville went to be with his Lord on Sunday December 4,
2011 in the Union General Hospital following a battle with cancer. Rev.
Becker was born on May 6, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY., the son of the late
Henry Becker and the late Constance Silver Becker. Alan was the founder
(1999) and pastor of the Immanuel House Christian Worship in Center in
Blairsville. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather.
Over the years through Immanuel House, Alan helped many families and
individuals by providing shelter, counseling and finding employment. He
will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the community. Surviving Rev. Becker are his loving wife of thirty one years, Connie Walker Becker of Blairsville, two sons and daughters in law, Alan Steven and Brenda Becker Jr. of Paramus, NJ., Todd and Susan Garrick of Dahlonega, one daughter, Kimberly Garrick of Blairsville, one brother, David Becker of Denver, CO., six grandchildren, Austin, Savannah and Althea Garrick, Jonathan, Aiden and Savannah Brundage, many other relatives and friends also survive. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Dec. 10, 2011 at 3:00pm from the Immanuel House Church with Pastor Connie Becker officiating. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Immanuel House Church, 139 Wren Drive Blairsville, GA. 30512 in Alan’s memory. Mrs. Ida Mae Langman age 106 of Bitter Creek Place Blairsville passed away on Sunday Dec. 4, 2011 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Langman was born on April 16, 1905 in La Porte, IN., the daughter of the late Frank Sult and the late Inez Goode Sult. Mae grew up in Cardo, N. Dakota and graduated from high school there. She attended Valparaiso University for two years. In her later years she moved to Avon Park, FL. where she was a Pink Lady at Walker Memorial Hospital for over thirty years. Mae enjoyed doing arts and crafts. She had a real passion for quilting. Mae was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Bradenton, FL, where she lived before moving to Blairsville. Surviving Mrs. Langman are three sons and daughters in law, Robert and Susan Langman of Blairsville, Duane and Jean Fritz of Kernville, CA., Allen and June Langman of La Porte, IN., one daughter, Virginia Casper of Denver, CO., one brother, Elmer Sult of Titusville, FL., one sister, Dorothy Hill of La Porte, IN., eighteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive. A memorial service will be held at a later date. | Mr. Bernie Deyton age 87
of Murphy Hwy. Blairsville passed away on Monday December 5, 2011 in the
Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Deyton was born on
Dec. 26, 1924 in Union County, the son of the late Mack Deyton and the
late Sudie Deaton Deyton. Mr. Deyton was a native and lifelong resident
of Union County. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and building furniture.
He also loved working and restoring cars. He was a loving husband,
father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great
grandfather and was a friend to many. Bernie was preceded in death by a
grand dather, Cynthia Deyton and several brothers and sisters. Mr.
Deyton was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. Surviving Mr. Deyton are his loving wife of fifty nine years, Opal Hughes Deyton of Blairsville, his children, Dennis Deyton of Blairsville, Anthony and Judy Deyton of Blairsville, Brenda and Bobby Cantrell of Blairsville., Barbara and Keith Rice of Winder, GA., Ricky Deyton of Blairsville, Bobby Deyton of Blairsville, Franklin Deyton of Blairsville, Greg and Glenda Deyton of Blairsville, one brother, Birlie Deyton of Blairsville, three sisters and one brother in law, Mary Ramey of Blairsville, Flora Bell Lee of Blairsville, Myrtle and Tommy Evans of Blairsville, nineteen grandchildren, thirty seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday Dec. 7, 2011 at 12:00pm from the Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Ray Potts officiating. Special music will be presented by the Ben Burrell Family and Melanie Schuenemann. The following gentleman will serve as pallbearers, Jason Schuenemann, Dewayne Cantrell, Stephen Crisp, Christopher, Nathan, Andy, Jordan and Jesse Deyton. Interment will follow in the Ebenezer Church Cemetery. The family will meet at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9pm.
